After our rainy but wonderful stay in Akumal, we headed towards the
beautiful island of Cozumel. Known as one of the most amazing scuba
diving destinations in the world, we were both eager to explore life
under the sea. We even ended up staying at a hotel with its own great
dive shop – Blue Angel – so no excuses!
We did our first dive together - Ragnhild trying it out for the first time through the Discover Scuba course and Emma going through a much-needed refresher. After going through all the practicalities and technicalities of diving, including equipment use, air pressure equalisation and environmental considerations, we were ready for our shore dive. We had a great time starting our diving adventure together, but due to our different levels we continued separately for the next few days...:
Raggy: I loved Cozumel! Its relaxed island lifestyle, wonderful views, brilliant weather and excellent food. Every morning I got up early to get in the ocean, where I spent most of my days gaining diving skills. The nights were full of (mostly live) music in excellent company, and complemented by cold and tasty drinks or a diving theory book that I had to get through in two days so I could pass my exam and get my open water diving license. Sitting on the beach revising and getting a tutorial from my excellent tutor Norman in the sunset, who is probably one of the most patient people I have ever met. The stay in Cozumel was hectic yet relaxing, highly rewarding and I did it – I am now a certified diver! I got to scuba dive amongst moonfish, stingrays, starfish and other colorful ocean creatures in a place usually mentioned as one of the top 10 places in the world to go diving. I have a feeling I will be back one day!
Emma: I took my Open Water and Advanced diving certifications on Utila during my gap year travels over six years ago. Although I still consider it one of the best experiences of my life, I am quite ashamed to admit I have not dived a single time since I left Honduras… That is - until now! When planning our stay in Cozumel, I knew the time had finally come for me to get back under the sea. And during our first shore dive together, it felt fantastic to be rediscovering the underwater world! When we got back out of the water, I signed up for a couple of two-tank dives right away. Although a little nervous at first, by the second day I was truly enjoying every second of it - from experiencing drift diving for the first time to seeing corals and creatures in all shapes, sizes and colours, including rays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. It definitely won't be another six years until next time!
In the end, our trip to Cozumel ended up being a diving holiday - and we both loved it. This is definitely an island worth visiting, and one we hope to come back to in the future - maybe for a Dreamer diving reunion! On our last evening, we celebrated Ragnhild's new Open Water certification with a delicious seafood dinner and fancy cocktails by the sea. Strolling through the city centre main square, we stumbled upon a live music venue and had unlimited requests played by a great musician as we sipped our tamarindo margaritas. A great end to a great holiday!
