I have now arrived in Kuala Lumpur, having officially completed my stay
in Dream Year destination número uno – wonderful Mexico. My last week in
Xalapa consisted of a good mix of work, packing stress and hanging out
with lovely friends, including spending one of my last evenings
celebrating the Day of the Dead in Naolinco.
As was made very clear
in this small mountain town that attracts people from all over the
country, the Day of the Dead – or Dia de Los Muertos - is not in any way
the Mexican version of Halloween. Rather, it is an old and sacred
tradition with indigenous roots that honours loved ones who have passed
away.
I am very grateful to have been able to experience the celebrations in Naolinco, including getting to see the many different representations of La Catrina and the beautiful altars families had built to pay respect to those who have died. In short, a great evening with great friends that for me marked the end to an amazing stay in the country.
On a completely different note and to conclude my final post on Mexico, here’s my collection of Indio labels – and not just because I consider tasting local beverages an important part of learning about a new culture! To celebrate its 120th anniversary, the brewing company launched a contest to promote Mexican artists and share depictions of different Mexican subcultures on their bottles. I loved both the artistic and cultural aspect of this and so with a little help from friends and bartenders I collected about half of them during my time in Xalapa. Ilu and Pepe – I expect you to continue my mission to get them all!
