My road to the Dream Year – Marcela

“If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.” - J.D. Salinger, The Catcher In The Rye

I was born in a small village in the middle of nowhere. As a kid, I was addicted to National Geographic series and I promised myself that one day I would go to all these fabulous places as well. Inspired by David Attenborough and books by J.R.R Tolkien, I always knew that I would leave it at some point and go traveling around the world.

I left home when I was 18, with one backpack and no money, within 5 years managed to live in 9 countries, backpack, hitchhike, learn 6 languages and graduate with a master's degree in Business. I promised myself that I would live every year in a different country, or get a job that will allow me to travel all the time and explore the world.

I started my adventure in Dublin then moved London. Once I mastered English I decided to pick up another language and I moved to Spain to study there. Still, not enough. I thought that French is so similar to Spanish that it could be a good idea to learn it as well. That is how I ended up in Brittany, in the north of France. Afterwards, since I have always admired Scandinavian culture I decided to do my master’s in Denmark. I have fallen in love with the country and I was ready to stay. One day however, I was offered an internship in Switzerland and I could not resist temptation to explore a new country and learn German this time. And that was a good choice – my Swiss job took me to Ethiopia and South Africa as well. Lamentably, I never managed to become fluent in German (I blame it on the Schwyzerdütsch and international friends). But nothing lost – it was actually an excellent excuse to go to Berlin, the capital of hipster culture and techno parties, where I learned proper German and I became interested in tech start-ups.

In the meantime I was looking for a Dream Job – requirements: tech start-up, preferably Scandinavian, work involving extensive travel and challenges, young and energetic team.

So here I am. Just found the ultimate travelling job – the Dream Year.

In the next 12 months my dreams will come true - I will be travelling around the world and see all the amazing places that many of us can just read about. My first stop - Mexico.  Follow me to stay updated on my journey with AidCom! :)
