For weeks now we have been looking forward to a holiday in the sunny south-east of Mexico in Quintana Roo. The two of us decided to really treat ourselves and book some incredible hotels with the possibility for scuba diving and other adventures. What we didn’t expect was that we would be spending more time running from the rain and wading through flooded areas than lying in the sun!
Emma wanted to use her advanced open water license again after not having dived for many years, and Raggy wanted to get certified to join her. Because of the storms, however, there was no way we could go diving in the ocean. We tried to go diving in some of the numerous cenotes the Yucatán peninsula has to offer, but due to flooding and heavy rains they were either too full of water or had really poor visibility. The storms also completely ruined our chances of seeing sea turtles nesting and baby turtles hatching and migrating to sea. This was certainly not due to lack of effort - from 7pm until sometimes 3 in the morning we trawled the beach with a red flashlight, desperately looking for turtles - to no avail... But we certainly weren't going to let the weather ruin the beginning of our holiday together! We still got to do some incredible things and meet some wonderful people, and really made the most out of our few days in Akumal and Tulum. Visual evidence:
