Let's go to a ghost beach

What do you see and what are your first associations when somebody says "Let's go to the beach" especially when you are in Mexico? I guess sun, sand and the sea, plenty of tourists suntanning, loud bars, restaurants and cocktails with paper umbrellas. At least that was something that I thought about when a friend of mine asked me whether I wanted to go to the beach near Veracruz.

The place where we went, la Playa San Angel, did not match the image above. It would rather make a perfect fit on the list of Most Haunting Abandoned Places. And if you are interested in ruin photography, that is definitely a place for you.
When we reached the spot, it was totally empty, quiet and  peaceful. You could not hear anything apart from the waves. It was just two of us, and it felt like we were not supposed to be there. Just as if somebody would come in a minute and tell us that it is a private property and we are trespassers. Just like in the movie The Beach.
Still, we decided to stay there. It was so much better than a crowded tourist site. That is the place where you go when you really want to take a break, relax, read a book and admire the nature.

We walked around a bit, and it looked like la playa San Angel used to be a tourist resort once. There was a housing complex with couple of buildings, all of them run-down and neglected. Or abandoned in a rush. The windows were broken, there were no doors. We sneaked in to one of the houses. It was a bit of a spine-chilling experience - who knows, maybe there were some unwanted tenants there. And it is Mexico. I was advised to never walk alone after the sun goes down, never go to areas that I do not know and be careful whatever I do. I have heard some thrilling stories since I came here.
Inside we did not find anything but plenty of sand, even inside an old dishwasher and remains of furniture. Apparently someone lived or planned to live there. Why did they leave the property? Hard to say.

We sat there for quite some time wondering if somebody would pass by at some point. I really wanted to find out what happened to this place and why it looks like as if it was abandoned in a rush. Maybe somebody would know. Nevertheless, the beach remained empty.

Till next time,

Cheers,
Marcela
